Designing for the Batiste Brand

A design challenge hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology, T-Minus provides an opportunity for students to engage with industry leaders in the application of design practices.

T-Minus 2026 featured Church & Dwight, the parent company to Batiste, Arm & Hammer, Hero, OxiClean, and other notable consumer product brands.

Over the course of 1 week, our team was tasked with examining Batiste's vast product catalog to reimagine a product in real time and present our work to a live panel of judges comprised of industry professionals and ambassadors for the Batiste brand.

In just this short week, our team researched concepts, developed a brand new product, pitched to investors, and were awarded 1st place for our efforts by the brand we were creating for.

Designing for the Batiste Brand

Reimagining Convenience

Traditional dry shampoo is typically an aerosolized product, which for many raises concerns surrounding both health and sustainability. In the United Kingdom, Batiste saw great success launching a powdered dry shampoo product, however, in the United states the product was not translating particularly well. This limited traction is in part from the reduced convenience compared to the aerosolized products.

The Dry Shampoo Powder Brush is made to simplify the application and elevate the experience of using dry shampoo to make it more appealing for the American market.

Using the existing Batiste Dry Shampoo Powder formula, our product removes the potential for mess and streamlines the application process.

Featuring a compact two part injection molded design, the Powder Brush prioritizes travel and reduces the need for frequent restocking with the equivalent lifespan of 3 aerosol cans.

Made using a semi-porous filter, the applicator allows powder to trickle down from the reservoir, through the antimicrobial barrier, straight to the roots of the hair, allowing for a mess free clean. The base of the product contains a simple comb, reducing the need to carry a brush yet allowing users to distribute the product or style their hair.

A Cohesive Brand Identity

In working with an established and wildly popular brand like Batiste, any new product must transition seamlessly from existing product lines.

To help bridge this gap, the Dry Shampoo Powder Brush integrates the visual language from the rest of the brand by mimicking the upward motion of the graphics featured throughout the brands identity.

This 'swoosh' is carried into the stripe featured on the outer shell of the brush, serving as both a visual reminder and a design cue that the product twists open and closed.

In the label graphics designed specifically for the new powder brush, this same upward movement is continued, further establishing the strong visual communication that exists across current Batiste products.

For the first display of the Dry Shampoo Powder Brush, our team developed graphics for the three most popular Batiste product variants, original, bare, and unscented.

The Competition

To best showcase the Dry Shampoo Powder Brush, we created several looks-like models and several works-like models to engage the judges with physical prototypes.

After an evening of presentations and pitches, our team was found to be the most thorough and innovative solution produced throughout the competition, coming away with a 1st place prize courtesy of Church & Dwight.

Feedback from industry professionals further highlighted the need in the hair care market, echoing the results of background product research conducted early in the design process.

Through the combination of high quality renders, early mockups and fabricated prototypes, the Dry Shampoo Powder Brush communicated most effectively the intention behind the design and showcased real world applicability.
