A Modular Soundscape

The Schachbrett Collection, design in collaboration with FilzFelt and Spinneybeck, reimagines acoustic wall treatments through a rigid modular framework. By utilizing three simple yet distinct geometric profiles, the collection allows for an element of customization beyond the manufacturing process through a variety of relief patterns that manipulate the sound within a space.

Acoustic Panel Design

Constructed for high-performance absorption, each tile features a 10mm Akustika Substrate layered with premium 3mm Merino Design Felt over the top. The collection is designed to be tactile and transformative. Whether configured in a traditional grid or a custom geometric flow, Schachbrett transforms a functional necessity into an aesthetic installation.

Technical Drawings

The Schachbrett Collection is engineered for seamless architectural integration. Each 11.81 in. x 11.81 in. module is manufactured using high-precision CNC to ensure the 45 degree chamfers align perfectly across large-scale installations. This precision allows for a low-tolerance fit, maintaining the rigidity of the grid pattern regardless of the chosen layout.

Performance

By directing incoming sound waves outward toward the room’s periphery, the chamfered edges scatter flutter echoes and prevent energy from bouncing directly back to the center where listener interaction occurs.

Complementing this, the flat sections maintain controlled specular reflections, preserving a baseline level of natural reverberation so the space retains its vitality without feeling unnaturally quiet.

The top layer of Merino wool felt provides a micro-textured, non-uniform surface area that diffuses high frequencies across its randomized fibers while trapping micro-reflections. Sound energy that penetrates this surface layer meets the dense acoustic substrate underneath, which absorbs lingering mid-to-low frequencies and converts that acoustic energy into heat to deliver balanced sound control.

Sustainability

Designed with longevity in mind, the collection utilizes Marino Wool Design Felt, a renewable, biodegradable, and VOC-free material.

When paired with the Akustika substrate, the system provides a high Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC), making it as functional in acoustic performance as it is striking in visual impact.

The panels are mounted via a concealed mechanical Z-clip system, allowing for easy repositioning or reuse as office layouts evolve.
